Writing Your Report

Now that you have finished your experiment, it's time to write a report about what you learned.  When you write your report, be sure to include information about all of the following.

  • Describe the experiment in detail, so that others get a clear picture of what you did.
  • What did you do to come up with a guess of how many candies were in your package?
  • How accurate were you in your guesses?
  • What did you learn about the difference between your single results and the results that were based on the entire group?
  • How do you think the results would change if you looked at the results of a much larger group?

Note to the teacher:  You might want to send students to http://www.starw.org/wolinsky/candy.html to enter their data.  This will add their data to a larger sample that represents all people who have done this activity and entered their data on the page.  You can print these instructions for downloading and manipulating the large data set that you can show to your class. While it's not for the faint of heart, it's a great exercise.  Try it!
