Candy is Dandy, but Math is Handy

In this four part activity, you will have fun with Math, Excel Spreadsheets, and Candy.

In Part 1, you will develop some hypotheses.  An hypothesis is an educated guess about something.  You will make some decisions about a bag of candy you will be given.

In Part 2, you open the candy, do some data collection, make a histogram with your candy, fill in a chart, and do some math.  After you have done the math and had your work approved by your teacher, you will get to eat the candy.

In Part 3, your teacher will help you create an Excel spreadsheet in which you will enter all of your data and then create a chart of your data and a chart of the group's data.

In Part 4, you will write a report that explains what you did and what you learned.

Below are links to each part.  Any time you click on a link in this activity, it will open in its own window.  When you are finished doing the work, you can close the window and you will be back at this page.

Part 1 - Hypotheses

Part 2 - Data Collection

Part 3 - Making a Spreadsheet

Part 4 - Write Your Report

Teacher Note:  If you don't have time for the above activities, here is a link to a spreadsheet that requires no work other than entering the number of colored candies. It does all the calculations and creates a pie chart.  Here is a link to a spreadsheet you can use to show the results of a larger sample via your computer projection device.  You can enter data for six groups.  It created a small chart for each group and a larger chart for the average of all six.
