PiCoMapallows students to create, share, and explore concept maps on their Palm OS computer. This program allows users to create multiple nodes and relationships leading to elaborate concept maps for brainstorming, visual outlining or assessment purposes. PiCoMaps can also be beamed to other students, the teacher, printed directly to an IR-equipped printer, or synchronized to a desktop computer.
Cootiesis a simulation program that students use collaboratively to examine the spread of disease. The teacher can determine the incubation time, individual immunity levels, and how many Cooties characters, called coodles, will start with the infection. Students meet and possibly "infect" each other by beaming their Palm OS devices. The Cooties program tracks which coodles students have met and will tell students if their coodle is sick. After students have finished meeting each other, they collaboratively determine the initial carrier of the disease and trace the transmission path among coodles. Classroom application: virus transfer simulation, HIV/AIDS, exponential growth, epidemiology
Reading for Meaning - This is a subscription service and it requires classroom sets of many different books. This doesn't make it viable for everyone, but ever if you only have only one of the books, it's worth signing up for the free 30-day trial. This will allow you to do at least one set of lessons and get an idea of how you can develop quality lessons based on resources your school may have.
