"Math
Rumble!" is an activity that I created for the children and
myself to participate in the Star-W Chat room. I sit at my
desktop computer and the students pair up into teams at the other
classroom computers. All of their "team names" are
their log-in names. At my desk, I see them log into the chat.
I write down all their team names on a chart as a "score
board." When all teams are logged in, I begin the activity
by typing in the chat room "Let's get ready to Math Rumble!!!!!!"
I then post a math problem for the students to solve (I have been
doing multiplication lately). The faster the teams type in
their answers in the chat, the more points they will earn.
For example, the first team with the correct answer will receive
10 points while the last team to respond correctly will receive
2 points. The catch is that I don't give the answer to the
problem until all teams answer. So, if they try to copy another
team's answer that is wrong, they will also get it wrong!
So, this reduces the amount of cheating. Plus, if they wait
for another team to answer, they will get less points due to their
delayed response. Here are some of the "Math Rumble"
games we have had so far.
